Jotta Group is a Norwegian cloud provider behind Jottacloud, Min Sky, and white-label cloud solutions for European partners like Telenor and Elkjøp. Since 2008 we've grown to nearly two million direct users and are today one of the few real European alternatives in a market dominated by global tech giants. We own and operate our own infrastructure, from physical data centers and hardware to the applications running on top, and store data in Norway, encrypted, physically secured, and governed by strict Norwegian and EU privacy law, on 100% renewable energy.
Today, Linux users get a command-line tool. That's it. Our sync and backup engine already runs on Linux, but there's no graphical app: We're changing that. We're looking for a Linux Developer to join our Desktop team and help decide what that app should be, then build and own it.
What you'll do
Our sync/backup engine is a mature, cross-platform Go daemon – the same engine already powering our Windows and macOS clients. The hard part on Linux isn't the engine, it's the UI layer, and how to build it is genuinely still open: port our existing Windows app to Avalonia, or build a native GTK app – or something else. We haven't picked, on purpose. You'll help us weigh those options and make the call, then build what we choose. You'll be joining a small team responsible for the entire desktop experience across Windows, macOS, and Linux; a few engineers and a product owner, with real ownership over what they build.
Once that's underway, you'll:
- Build and maintain the Linux GUI client, wiring it to our shared engine over gRPC
- Own Linux packaging and distribution, the background daemon lifecycle, and desktop-environment integration
- Fix Linux-specific behavior in the shared engine: filesystem events, paths, permissions
- Be our resident Linux expert, reviewing Linux-affecting changes across the codebase
- Build out Linux test coverage and CI from scratch. This is an area we're investing in, and you'd define what it looks like for Linux
Is this you?
Linux expertise
- Linux is your main working environment, used day to day, not occasionally or in a VM
- You know Linux application packaging and distribution inside out:
.deb/.rpm, Flatpak, Snap, AppImage, and the trade-offs between them - You have the judgment to weigh different ways of building a Linux app on their merits, not just execute a stack someone handed you
Technical background
- You know how to build a desktop UI that talks to a local background service through a well-defined API
- You know enough Go to read and work alongside a large Go codebase — you don't need to be a Go expert
- You're comfortable with concurrency and know your way around debugging native applications
- Hands-on experience with either .NET/XAML or Rust/GTK is a plus, though judgment across stacks matters more than mastery of one
Why Jotta?
- You'll own the Linux client end to end – from the UI down to packaging and daemon integration, with a short path from idea to shipped software
- Real influence from day one: you'll help decide how the Linux app gets built, not just execute a stack someone else picked
- A clear doer culture, high trust, and a strong technical community across Trondheim and Oslo
- A stable, profitable company with a history of healthy organic growth, built for the long term
- Hybrid work with real flexibility, 7 + 3% pension, and 7 extra vacation days on top of the statutory minimum
- Offices in Oslo and Trondheim
